Shutting Down Well Pumps
- If possible, turn off water to your curb stop (see note below) before turning off the main.
- If you must turn off the main water, FIRST remove power from the well pumps. If that is not done, dangerous over pressure will occur as the pump tries to move water that has no place to go.
- Close the valves on the main water line
To turn off water at your curb stop (isolating your house without requiring the main water to be shut off): Depending on the age and style of your curb stop, you may need to first remove the cap/lid of the curb stop shutoff valve. This requires using the small hand-held hex “key” wrench (located at the pump house on Cougar Drive). Then use one of the two different styles of curb stop valve tools (poles approximately 6 to 8 feet long also located in same pump house). To turn the valve off, turn clockwise. Usually one-quarter turn is all that is necessary.
